Augrabies Backpackers is situated a mere 10km from the spectacular Augrabies Falls. The falls are definitely one of the must see’s in our area. Let us pack you a picnic basket to enjoy whilst visiting the falls and exploring our beautiful National Park.

Besides all the regular animals we keep as a working farm, we also have pets. Elfie (above) was one of them. She was deformed and only lived for two weeks, but while she did, she was the happiest little lamb you could ever know.

We are affectionately known by some locals as “the zoo” due to the variety of animals we keep. We volunteer with a local animal welfare program that rescues, traps, nutres and returns ferrel cats, etc.

About the Falls

The Augrabies Falls is a waterfall on the Orange River, the largest river in South Africa. The waterfall is enclosed by the Augrabies Falls National Park. The falls are around 183 feet in height.

The name is derived from the Nama word “Aukoerebis”. The name, used by the Khoi people, means the “Place of Great Noise.” This refers to the Orange River water thundering its way down the 56 m spectacular main Water Fall.

We grow 90% of the food for our animals right here. Everything is organic and we use no pesticides or chemical fertilisers. During the course of a year you will find sunflower, teff, oats, corn, lucern, millet and sorghum.

Augrabies Backpackers is a real hidden treasure between green Plantages. We enjoyed watching sunsets/-rises and relaxed on the little organic farm, while the dogs, geeses, cats etc.jumped around us and the very helpful, pleasant and powerful owners worked in the beautiful garden. We were even allowed to milk the 2 goats!;-) highly recommended

A pleasant place to spend the night and lots in the area to see and do. A hostess who does not mind going the extra mile to make your stay comfortable and convenient. Thank you for the ice in the ice hockey, 5l bottle of ice cold water already in the fridge and nice grapes to make you feel welcome. The room has everything one needs and if you do not feel like driving for entertainment there is about a zoo with a large variety of animals on site to view and a swimming pool to dive in if the heat leaves you melt.

Staying at the Augrabies Backpackers was a nice change from Cape Town city life and you will be part of a working farm with goats, sheep, chickens, geese, turkeys, cats and dogs as well as vegetables and a plant nursery. I received a warm welcome and was shown around the farm on arrival that was much appreciated. All the people living on the farm showed me warmth and respect and were very welcoming. I enjoyed the swimming pool and used it many times to cool off as it gets a little warm in Augrabies. Those families with young children will really enjoy petting the friendly goats, sheep, dogs and cats. May God bless this wonderful place to really prosper and thanks to each one of you for your kindness and hospitality that made my stay enjoyable.
